Severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, caused major disruptions across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Friday morning. Several flights were diverted or delayed as dense clouds, strong winds, and persistent rain battered the region.
The inclement weather significantly impacted air travel, particularly at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, where a metal structure at Terminal 3 collapsed due to the strong winds and rain. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in the incident. Authorities are assessing the damage and ensuring passenger safety.
Amid the chaos, major airlines including IndiGo and Air India have issued travel advisories urging passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
IndiGo’s statement cautioned travellers about potential delays due to the forecasted thunderstorms and advised them to leave early for the airport, anticipating not just flight disruptions but also possible traffic delays on rain-affected roads.
Air India echoed similar concerns, citing weather-induced disruptions in northern India. The airline acknowledged that several of its Delhi-bound and departing flights were experiencing delays and assured passengers that efforts were underway to reduce the impact on schedules.
The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) also released an advisory on social media, notifying the public of weather-related interruptions and encouraging passengers to stay updated by contacting their respective airlines.
Schools in several parts of the national capital were also closed in response to the weather conditions, as local authorities prioritized the safety of students.
With more rain predicted, travellers and residents are being urged to exercise caution and remain updated through official channels.
