Backed by digital innovation, a rapidly growing consumer base, and a flourishing media sector, India is on course to establish itself among the world’s top five entertainment hubs by 2030, according to an upcoming government-commissioned white paper.
The document, titled “India’s Live Events Economy: A Strategic Growth Imperative,” is set to be unveiled on May 3 during the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, being held at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. The release will be led by L Murugan, Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs.
Commissioned by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, the white paper offers an in-depth analysis of India’s live entertainment sector, mapping its transformation from a fragmented industry into a well-structured and dynamic contributor to the country’s cultural and economic landscape.
The study outlines a significant evolution in India’s live events space, especially between 2024 and 2025—marked by international acts such as Coldplay performing in major cities like Ahmedabad and Mumbai. These high-profile performances signal India’s growing capacity to host global-scale events and attract international talent.
One of the standout trends highlighted in the report is the emergence of “event tourism,” with nearly half a million individuals traveling across cities specifically for live music experiences. This has laid the foundation for a burgeoning music-tourism economy. Additionally, premium ticketing categories—including VIP experiences, luxury hospitality, and exclusive access—have seen over 100% growth year-on-year, reflecting a shift toward an experience-centric audience.
Another significant development is the increasing participation from Tier-2 cities, driven by the expansion of multi-city tours and the rising popularity of regional cultural festivals. In 2024 alone, the organized live events sector witnessed a 15% growth rate, adding an estimated ₹13 billion in revenue and making it one of the fastest-growing segments of India’s media and entertainment industry.
Furthermore, the sector’s contribution to employment is notable, with large-scale events generating between 2,000 to 5,000 temporary jobs each—fostering both job creation and skills development.
The white paper emphasizes that with continued investments, supportive policy frameworks, and infrastructural enhancements, India is well-positioned to elevate its status on the global live entertainment stage. Achieving this goal is expected to unlock significant economic potential, boost tourism, and enhance India’s cultural footprint worldwide.
