The Bangaaru Vaickal Neeradhara Koottamaippu, a prominent water users’ association, has called for the immediate intervention of Lt. Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan to ensure the timely provision of essential agricultural inputs to farmers during the critical Sornavari season.
Memorandum Highlights Farmers’ Plight
In a detailed memorandum addressed to the Lt. Governor and other relevant officials, V. Chandrasekhar, the association’s president, expressed concern over the delayed procurement of agricultural inputs. Despite the commencement of paddy harvesting, the Department of Agriculture has yet to make alternative arrangements for acquiring and distributing necessary seeds and other inputs to farmers.
Subsidised Seed Distribution Delayed
Chandrasekhar emphasized the need for the immediate implementation of the Chief Minister’s budget announcement regarding the distribution of paddy seeds at subsidised rates. The delay in executing this scheme is causing significant distress among farmers, who rely heavily on these inputs for their livelihood.
Absence of Direct Procurement Centres
Another critical issue highlighted in the memorandum is the absence of direct procurement centres for purchasing paddy at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) announced by the Government of India. This oversight is preventing farmers from receiving the MSP, further exacerbating their financial difficulties.
Call for Immediate Action
Chandrasekhar urged the Lt. Governor to intervene and ensure the swift implementation of the schemes announced by the Chief Minister in the budget. He stressed that immediate action is necessary to support farmers and address the challenges they face due to the delayed supply of agricultural inputs.
The farmers of the region are eagerly awaiting a positive response from the authorities to mitigate their ongoing struggles and ensure a successful Sornavari season.
