Look for a creamy yellow spot on the underside of the watermelon. This indicates it ripened on the vine, enhancing its sweetness.
Choose a watermelon that feels heavy for its size. Heavier melons typically have higher water content, making them juicier and sweeter.
Opt for a melon with a dull, dark skin rather than a shiny one. A dull exterior suggests ripeness, while a shiny surface may indicate it's underripe.
Notice the brown, web-like patterns on the rind. These "sugar spots" are signs of sweetness and good pollination.
Gently tap the watermelon; a ripe one will produce a deep, hollow sound. A dull or flat sound may indicate it's overripe or underripe.
Select a watermelon that is symmetrical and uniform in shape. Irregularities can suggest inconsistent growth and potential quality issues.
If the stem is still attached, it should be brown and dry, indicating the fruit was harvested at peak ripeness. A green stem suggests it was picked too early.
