Kerala Weather: Red Alert Issued for Heavy Rainfall in Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts of Kerala. The state has been experiencing heavy rain in isolated places, leading to landslides, uprooted trees, and waterlogging following the early commencement of the Southwest Monsoon.

Expected Rainfall and Areas of Impact

According to the IMD, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall, exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Idukki and Wayanad, predicting rainfall between 64.5 mm and 204.4 mm from June 1 to June 2, 2025.

Intense Rainfall Across Kerala

The districts of Kottayam, Idukki, and parts of Ernakulam have been experiencing intense downpours since Friday night. Reports of landslides and uprooted trees have come from the Poochapra and Kolappra areas in Idukki, highlighting the severe impact of the weather.

Forecast for the Coming Days

The latest IMD update indicates that isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over South Peninsular India for the next four to five days. Kerala and Mahe are particularly expected to receive very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during this period, attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea off the south Kerala coast and another over Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Specific Weather Predictions

The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching up to 40 kmph in Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Malappuram districts. Moderate rainfall is expected in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam districts, while light rainfall is likely in Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts.

Early Monsoon Onset Linked to Cyclone Remal

Weather scientists suggest that Cyclone Remal, which recently impacted West Bengal and Bangladesh, may have influenced the early onset of the monsoon over northeast India. The cyclone is believed to have pulled the monsoonal flow towards the Bay of Bengal, contributing to the current weather patterns.

Safety Precautions and Advisories

Authorities have urged residents in the affected districts to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant. The public is advised to stay updated with the latest weather reports and heed warnings issued by the IMD and local authorities. Emergency services are on high alert to respond to any incidents resulting from the heavy rainfall.
