Union Minister of Jal Shakti C.R. Patil on December 10 2025 launched the Sujalam Bharat App, a major digital intervention aimed at transforming the governance and monitoring of rural drinking water supply across the country. Developed with the technical support of the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N), the platform brings advanced geo-referencing and real-time data management to the Jal Jeevan Mission ecosystem.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister said the app represents “an important milestone in strengthening transparency and community participation in rural drinking water systems.”
States/UTs Oriented to New Unified Digital System
During the event, Ashok K.K. Meena, Secretary, DDWS, highlighted the need for timely data integration and systematic adoption of the Sujalam Bharat platform by States and Union Territories.
T.P. Singh, Director General, BISAG-N, presented the technological framework underpinning the Sujalam Bharat App and the nationwide Sujalam Bharat Database, explaining how it will help streamline operations and maintenance of rural water supply assets.
Officials from all States and UTs joined the launch virtually, demonstrating a unified national approach to strengthening water governance.
A detailed training session was later conducted by the BISAG-N technical team, covering app operations, geo-referencing protocols, and integration of water supply assets on the digital platform. The session ensured field functionaries and state-level teams are equipped to implement the system effectively.
Sujal Gaon ID: A Unique Identity for Every Rural Water Scheme
A key feature of the initiative is the creation of a Sujal Gaon ID—a unique identifier for every rural water scheme and its service area. This will clearly map which scheme supplies water to which habitations and households.
The Sujalam Bharat Database aggregates crucial information such as:
Water sources and supply type
Infrastructure condition and asset inventory
Water quality status
Reliability of supply
O&M mechanisms
Community feedback and service performance
By providing a unified digital profile for every habitation, the platform enhances accountability of Gram Panchayats, VWSCs, and service providers, while encouraging greater community oversight.
Advancing Long-Term Sustainability
The system will maintain a secure historical record of infrastructure condition, maintenance activities, and service-level achievements—supporting better planning and sustainability of rural drinking water systems. Integration with PM Gati Shakti GIS offers real-time geospatial maps of rural water networks, helping States plan repairs, upgrades, and future expansion with greater accuracy.
In his concluding remarks, Kamal Kishore Soan, AS & MD, NJJM, urged States and UTs to prepare structured action plans and ensure timely data submission to avoid operational delays.
A Foundational Digital Reform for Viksit Bharat 2047
The launch of the Sujalam Bharat App marks a major step in building the technological foundation for a reliable and citizen-centric rural water delivery system. Much like Aadhaar transformed identity management in India, the Sujal Gaon ID aims to serve as the digital backbone of rural water governance.
The Sujalam Bharat App will be made available on the Google Play Store soon.
