Top 5 Highest Mountains on Earth

By Divya

1. MOUNT EVEREST (8,849m / 29,032ft)

The roof of the world. Sitting on the Nepal-Tibet border, Everest's summit pierces through jet stream winds where oxygen is only one-third of sea level.

2. K2 (8,611m / 28,251ft)

The Savage Mountain. Located on the Pakistan-China border, K2 is deadlier than Everest with one death for every four successful summit attempts.

3. KANGCHENJUNGA (8,586m / 28,169ft)

The Five Treasures of Snow. Straddling Nepal and India, this sacred peak was the highest known mountain until 1852 when surveyors discovered Everest.

4. LHOTSE (8,516m / 27,940ft)

Everest's neighbor connected by the South Col. Its south face is one of Earth's steepest climbs, a 3,000-meter wall of ice rising almost vertically.

5. MAKALU (8,485m / 27,838ft)

The pyramid-shaped giant. Just 19 kilometers from Everest, Makalu's isolated pyramid structure and razor-sharp ridges make it extremely challenging.

All five peaks are in the Himalayas. The world's 14 highest mountains above 8,000 meters are all located in the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges.
