The Indian stock market will remain shut today, Thursday, 1 May 2025, in observance of Maharashtra Day, also known as Maharashtra Divas. This state holiday marks the formation of Maharashtra and is widely celebrated across the state, including Mumbai—the financial hub of the country and home to India’s key stock exchanges.
As a result, all major stock exchanges, including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), National Stock Exchange (NSE), and Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), are closed for the day. Normal trading operations will resume on Friday, 2 May 2025.
Investors are advised to take note of the closure and plan their trades accordingly. The official BSE website (www.bseindia.com) provides a complete list of stock market holidays for 2025, which can be accessed via the ‘Trading Holidays’ section on the homepage. The same information is also available on the NSE website.
According to the 2025 trading holiday list, trading will be suspended today across various segments, including the Equity Segment, Equity Derivatives, and Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB). Additionally, the Currency Derivatives, NDS-RST, and Tri-Party Repo segments will also remain closed.
However, trading in the Commodity Derivatives and Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) segments will only be paused for the morning session (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM). Activities in these segments will resume in the evening session, starting from 5:00 PM.
Maharashtra Day is the only trading holiday in May 2025. The next stock market holiday is scheduled for Independence Day on 15 August 2025, followed by Ganesh Chaturthi on 27 August 2025.
Looking ahead, the Indian stock market will observe three holidays in October 2025: 2 October (Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra), 21 October (Diwali), and 22 October (Diwali Balipratipada). In the final two months of the year, markets will be closed on 5 November (Prakash Gurpurb of Guru Nanak Dev) and 25 December (Christmas Day).
Investors are encouraged to regularly check the holiday calendar to avoid disruptions in their trading activities.
