Two months after the tragic Air India crash in Gujarat’s Meghaninagar area, grieving families gathered at the crash site on Tuesday evening to pay tribute to their loved ones through a candlelight vigil.
United States-based aviation lawyer Mike Andrews, currently in Gujarat to meet relatives of the deceased, also joined the memorial. “Around 20 to 25 family members of the victims — including those who were onboard and residents who lost their lives on the ground — took part in the vigil,” said Kuldip Israni, Andrews’ media coordinator.
On August 8, Andrews announced that at least 65 bereaved families from India and the United Kingdom have engaged the US law firm Beasley Allen, where he serves as an aviation attorney. He stated that, depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation, families may have the option to file a product liability lawsuit in a US court.
The devastating accident occurred on June 12, when Air India’s Boeing 787-8, bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft struck a medical hostel complex and erupted in flames, claiming the lives of 241 of the 242 passengers and crew, as well as 19 people on the ground, including four medical students.
Over the past week, Andrews has met families of several victims in Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Surat, and nearby Diu to discuss legal options and offer support.
