A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday morning, sending strong tremors across several districts of West Bengal and parts of Northeast India. The quake occurred at around 10:08 am and lasted for a few seconds, according to initial assessments.
Residents in Kolkata, Malda, Nadia, Cooch Behar, and districts such as Uttar and Dakshin Dinajpur reported feeling the ground shake. Many people rushed out of homes and offices as buildings swayed briefly. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) also confirmed that tremors were recorded across multiple locations.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the earthquake was located in Ghorasal, situated in Bangladesh’s Dhaka region, at a shallow depth of 10 km. The quake was also felt across several parts of Northeast India.
This incident marks the third seismic event of the day, following two moderate-intensity earthquakes recorded earlier in Pakistan and Afghanistan, as reported by NCS.
A resident of Salt Lake Sector 3 in Kolkata took to social media to describe the moment, stating that ceiling fans and furniture shook for nearly seven to eight seconds. However, authorities have confirmed that no reports of damage or casualties have surfaced so far.
Shortly after the tremors, visuals began circulating on social media showing people evacuating residential complexes, schools, and business establishments as a precaution.
The earthquake briefly interrupted the ongoing Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland in Dhaka. Play was halted for a few minutes as players and officials assessed the situation, but the match resumed without any reported damage.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, though no major impact has been recorded at this time.
