Pune Airport Set To Likely Open New Terminal in May

Pune is gearing up to inaugurate its new airport terminal in the first week of May, following the decision of the Airport Authority of India (AAI). The unveiling marks a significant milestone in Pune’s aviation infrastructure, aimed at enhancing passenger convenience and operational efficiency.

Initial Testing Phase: Pune Airport

During the initial phase of the terminal’s opening, only two airlines, Air India and Air India Express, have been designated to operate from the new facility. This cautious approach allows for a comprehensive assessment of the terminal’s functionality and passenger experience before broader implementation.

The remaining flights will continue to operate from the existing terminal, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations. The selected airlines will conduct “test flights” to evaluate the terminal’s operational readiness and address any potential challenges encountered during the transition.

Approval and Security Compliance

The approval for the new terminal was recently granted by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), underscoring its compliance with stringent safety and security standards. BCAS plays a pivotal role in establishing and enforcing safety protocols across India’s civil aviation landscape, ensuring the seamless operation of domestic and international flights.

Following BCAS approval, the testing phase commenced, focusing on specific aircraft to validate the terminal’s infrastructure and operational capabilities. With an average of 16 daily flights operated by Air India and Air India Express from Pune airport, the new terminal is poised to handle up to 32 flights per day once fully operational.

Awaiting Official Confirmation

Santosh Dhoke, director of Pune Airport, stated that while BCAS has approved the new terminal, official correspondence confirming the same is pending. Once the formal communication is received, airport authorities will proceed with facilitating airline operations from the new terminal. However, the specific commencement date remains undisclosed until formal confirmation is received.

The impending inauguration of Pune’s new airport terminal heralds a new era of modernized infrastructure and enhanced passenger services, aligning with the city’s growth trajectory and bolstering its connectivity on the national and international aviation map.
