Tensions between India and Pakistan surged on Friday after reports emerged of cross-border firing initiated by Pakistan Army troops along the Line of Control (LoC). According to Indian Army officials, Pakistani forces resorted to small arms fire at multiple locations across the LoC, prompting swift retaliation from Indian troops.
“Small arms firing at some locations along the Line of Control was initiated by the Pakistan Army. The Indian Army responded effectively. No casualties have been reported so far,” officials stated.
This latest development comes on the heels of a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, in which 26 tourists were killed. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and protests across India, with citizens demanding firm and immediate action against Pakistan.
In response to the Pahalgam massacre, the Indian government has taken a series of strong diplomatic measures. Among the key steps announced are the immediate closure of the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari and the suspension of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) for Pakistani nationals. Pakistani citizens currently in India have been given 40 hours to leave the country.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, in a press briefing, declared several Pakistani military representatives in New Delhi as Persona Non Grata, including Defence, Naval, and Air Advisors. They have been instructed to leave India within a week. In a reciprocal move, India will also withdraw its corresponding advisors and five supporting staff from its High Commission in Islamabad. These diplomatic roles in both nations’ missions are now officially considered nullified.
Additionally, the Indian government has halted the Indus Waters Treaty, a bilateral water-sharing agreement signed in 1960, citing Pakistan‘s alleged support for cross-border terrorism.
With border tensions escalating and diplomatic ties deteriorating rapidly, the situation remains tense. The international community is closely monitoring developments as the risk of further confrontation looms.
Further updates are awaited as the situation continues to evolve.
