GPAI 2023: Advancing Responsible AI in Public-Sector Applications

The Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), a collaborative initiative dedicated to advancing AI research and its practical applications, is set to hold its Annual Summit in New Delhi from December 12 to 14, 2023. The event, inaugurated by the Prime Minister, will bring together senior government delegations from 29 member countries, the European Union, multi-stakeholder experts, and global AI professionals.

Established in June 2020 with 15 members, GPAI has significantly expanded its reach, currently boasting a membership of 28 countries and the European Union. India, a founding member and the incoming Support Chair for GPAI, is poised to take the Lead Chair role in 2024.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in collaboration with the Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at IIT Madras, is organizing a Research Symposium during the Summit. The Symposium, themed ‘Advancing Responsible AI in Public-Sector Applications,’ aims to foster collaboration among Indian and international academics and researchers. It provides a global platform for presenting actionable research on Responsible AI and promoting cross-sectoral collaboration.

The Symposium features two tracks: one hosting invited expert speakers and the other, a conference shortlist track, both ensuring high-quality discussions and outputs. Distinguished scholars and practitioners from institutions such as New York University, Oxford University, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh, are participating.

The call for papers for the conference shortlist track, issued on July 24, 2023, received an overwhelming response from over 36 countries. Submissions covered diverse topics, including Responsible AI principles, Algorithmic Accountability, and Explainability, as well as Responsible AI Assessments. Following a meticulous review process involving experts from academia, industry, and government, 11 submissions were selected out of the numerous entries.

The final selection of 15 submissions, comprising 4 from invited expert speakers and 11 from the conference shortlist track, spans a wide array of topics. Authors from over 11 countries, including India, the United States of America, France, Australia, Norway, the United Kingdom, Finland, Kenya, Ireland, Belgium, and Germany, will present their research at the Symposium.

The Annual GPAI Summit, hosted by India, reaffirms the commitment of the global community to address the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence while emphasizing responsible and ethical AI practices in the public sector.
