Severe Heat Wave to Continue in North India for Next 24 Hours, Relief Expected Afterwards: IMD

Severe heat wave conditions continue to grip several parts of India, with temperatures soaring to dangerous levels. The highest temperature recorded in the country yesterday was 47.6°C in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Here’s a detailed weather update for the past 24 hours and forecasts for the coming days.

Heat Wave Conditions

  • Regions Affected: Most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh experienced severe heat wave conditions. Parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and north Madhya Pradesh also faced extreme heat. Isolated pockets in northeast Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Jharkhand were similarly affected.
  • Night Temperatures: Warm to severe warm night conditions were observed in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh, with isolated warm nights in Rajasthan and Bihar.
  • Temperature Range: Maximum temperatures in the plains of North India ranged between 44-46°C, which is 5-8°C above normal.

Rainfall and Monsoon Advancements

  • Heavy Rainfall: Exceptionally heavy rainfall was reported in Meghalaya, with heavy to very heavy falls in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and isolated heavy showers in Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana, South Interior Karnataka, and Rayalaseema.
  • Southwest Monsoon: The Northern Limit of the Monsoon currently passes through several regions including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Northwest Bay of Bengal. Conditions are favorable for further advance into more parts of these regions over the next 3-4 days.

Weather Systems and Forecasts

  • Northeast India: A cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam, combined with strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, will bring widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds in the region. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.
  • Western India: A cyclonic circulation over Northeast Arabian Sea and another over Westcentral Bay of Bengal will cause scattered light to moderate rainfall in Gujarat, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and parts of Karnataka. Heavy rainfall is predicted for Konkan & Goa, Gujarat, and Madhya Maharashtra in the coming days.
  • Central India: West Madhya Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh will experience scattered rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds. Hailstorms are likely in East Madhya Pradesh.
  • Northwest India: Isolated light rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected in Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Temperature Forecast

  • Northwest India: Temperatures are expected to fall by about 2°C over the next two days, followed by a rise of 2-3°C.
  • East and Central India: A fall in temperatures by about 2-3°C is expected over the next 3-5 days.

Warnings

  • Heat Wave: Severe heat wave conditions will persist in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Bihar, Jammu-Kashmir, and north Coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next few days.
  • Warm Nights: Warm to severe warm night conditions will continue in Uttar Pradesh, with warm nights in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

The current weather patterns in India highlight the urgent need for preparedness and caution. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and follow local advisories for their safety.
