Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (14 September) launched and laid the foundation stone for infrastructure and industrial projects worth over ₹18,530 crore in Assam, reaffirming the government’s focus on boosting connectivity, healthcare, clean energy, and regional growth in the North-East.
The Prime Minister began his day in Darrang around 11 AM, where he laid the foundation stone of several key initiatives. These include the Darrang Medical College & Hospital, a GNM School, and a BSc Nursing College, aimed at strengthening medical education and healthcare services in the state. He also flagged off work on the Guwahati Ring Road Project, expected to ease congestion and improve urban mobility in and around the capital city, and the Kuruwa–Narengi Bridge over the Brahmaputra, which will enhance connectivity and spur socio-economic development across the region.
Later in the afternoon, at around 1:45 PM, Modi inaugurated the Assam Bio-ethanol Private Limited’s Numaligarh Refinery Plant in Golaghat, marking a step towards promoting clean energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. At 2:30 PM, he also laid the foundation stone of the Polypropylene Plant at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), which is expected to generate employment, add value to Assam’s petrochemical sector, and stimulate local economic activity.
Sharing his views on social media, the Prime Minister said these projects would not only strengthen Assam’s economy but also create jobs and encourage sustainable development.
Tribute to Bhupen Hazarika
On Friday evening, following his visit to Manipur — his first since the 2023 ethnic violence — Modi joined the centenary celebrations of legendary musician Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika in Guwahati. Paying homage, the Prime Minister lauded Hazarika’s lifelong contribution to India’s unity and integrity, and reiterated his government’s commitment to realising the artist’s vision of a prosperous North-East.
“Decades ago, when the North East was battling neglect and separatism, Bhupen Da gave voice to India’s unity. Today, we are working tirelessly to fulfil his dream of a flourishing North East,” Modi said. He also released a commemorative coin and postal stamp in Hazarika’s honour.
Upcoming Visit to West Bengal and Bihar
The Prime Minister’s itinerary will continue on 15 September, when he travels to West Bengal to inaugurate the 16th Combined Commanders’ Conference-2025 in Kolkata at 9:30 AM. Later in the day, he will arrive in Bihar to inaugurate the new terminal building of Purnea Airport at 2:45 PM. Modi will also lay the foundation stone and dedicate projects worth nearly ₹36,000 crore in Purnea, and formally launch the National Makhana Board, a move expected to benefit local farmers.
With Bihar gearing up for elections later this year, the Prime Minister is likely to use the occasion to highlight the government’s focus on infrastructure, agriculture, and regional growth.
