Technology giants OpenAI and Meta Platforms have engaged in separate discussions with India’s Reliance Industries to explore potential partnerships aimed at expanding artificial intelligence (AI) offerings in the country, according to a report by The Information.
A key aspect of these discussions involves a possible collaboration between Reliance Jio and OpenAI to distribute ChatGPT in India. The report, citing sources familiar with the matter, suggests that OpenAI has also internally discussed reducing the ChatGPT subscription price significantly, potentially lowering it from $20 per month to just a few dollars. However, it remains uncertain whether this pricing strategy has been officially proposed to Reliance.
Additionally, Reliance is reportedly exploring the sale of OpenAI’s models to its enterprise clients through an application programming interface (API). Discussions have also revolved around hosting and operating OpenAI’s models within India to ensure local customer data remains within the country’s borders.
One of the more ambitious plans under consideration is the integration of Meta and OpenAI models into a large-scale data center that Reliance is planning to build in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The facility, projected to have a capacity of three gigawatts, is expected to be the world’s largest data center, as per Reliance’s claims.
While Meta has declined to comment on these discussions, OpenAI and Reliance Industries have yet to respond to inquiries regarding the report.
Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, is among India’s most influential conglomerates, with business interests spanning petrochemicals, oil and gas exploration, telecommunications, retail, and green energy. Its subsidiary, Reliance Jio, has played a key role in revolutionizing India’s digital landscape, making it a strong candidate for AI collaborations. As AI adoption gains momentum in India, potential partnerships such as these could significantly enhance the accessibility and deployment of advanced AI models in the region.
