India is celebrating its 79th Independence Day today, commemorating the nation’s historic liberation from nearly two centuries of British rule in 1947.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive at the historic Red Fort around 7:30 am to inspect the Guard of Honour before hoisting the national flag. At 7:45 am, he will deliver his 12th consecutive Independence Day address to the nation since assuming office in 2014. His traditional attire and signature colourful turban, a highlight of both Independence Day and Republic Day ceremonies, are expected to draw attention once again.
This year’s address is expected to focus on India’s growing role on the global stage, strengthening of international partnerships, and the armed forces’ role in safeguarding national security. A significant portion of the speech is likely to honour the bravery displayed during Operation Sindoor—the Indian military’s precision strikes dismantling Pakistan-based terror infrastructure in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 civilian lives.
Sources suggest the Prime Minister may also announce the central government’s readiness to support the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, following a proposal from the Union Territory’s Governor. The speech is anticipated to cover four major themes: acknowledging the armed forces’ service, boosting indigenous defence production under Make in India, launching fresh policies for women and farmers, and presenting an economic plan to elevate India to the position of the world’s third-largest economy.
Operation Sindoor in Focus
The 79th Independence Day also marks 100 days since Operation Sindoor. The Red Fort is adorned with themed decorations, including large emblems on its walls, in tribute to the armed forces’ success. Indian Air Force helicopters carrying the operation’s insignia will fly over the venue, while the 21-gun salute will be executed using domestically made 105 mm artillery guns.
Security and Traffic Arrangements
Delhi has been placed under a multi-layered security blanket, with extensive deployment of police and paramilitary forces at strategic points across the city. Drones are being used for aerial monitoring, and strict entry checks are in place at the Red Fort. Prohibited items include bags, electronic devices, photography gear, umbrellas, fireworks, and food items.
To facilitate the event, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory enforcing road closures and diversions around the Red Fort from 4:00 am to 10:00 am. Several bus services are curtailed, and parking restrictions are in effect.
With all arrangements in place, the celebrations are set to be a vibrant display of India’s unity, sovereignty, and rich cultural heritage.
