Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commemorated National Technology Day by paying tribute to India’s scientific achievements, particularly recalling the historic Pokhran nuclear tests conducted in 1998. In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister expressed pride in the country’s technological advancements and reaffirmed his government’s dedication to scientific growth and innovation.
National Technology Day is observed annually on May 11 to honor the successful nuclear tests carried out under Operation Shakti in Pokhran, Rajasthan. The day also marks the maiden flight of Hansa-3, an indigenously-developed aircraft, symbolizing India’s progress in aeronautical engineering.
“This is a day to express pride and gratitude to our scientists and remember the 1998 Pokhran tests. They were a landmark event in our nation’s growth trajectory, especially in our quest towards self-reliance,” PM Modi said in his post.
He further highlighted India’s rising stature in the global tech arena, pointing to significant strides in areas such as space exploration, artificial intelligence, digital innovation, and green technology.
“Powered by our people, India is emerging as a global leader in different aspects of technology,” he noted, underlining the importance of continued investment in research and education.
The Prime Minister concluded his message with a hopeful vision for the future: “May technology uplift humanity, secure our nation and drive futuristic growth.”
National Technology Day was first declared by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999, a year after the Pokhran-II tests, to celebrate India’s scientific excellence and inspire future generations.
