In a momentous event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for an international cricket stadium in Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency. This marked a significant development for sports enthusiasts in the region and added another feather to the city’s cap. During his address at a rally after the foundation stone laying ceremony, PM Modi expressed his joy at visiting Varanasi, a city close to his heart. He acknowledged the unique connection between Kashi and the moon’s Shiv Shakti point and celebrated India’s success in space exploration. He also emphasized the significance of the new cricket stadium, stating that it would be a blessing for the youth of Purvanchal.

PM Modi highlighted the global reach of cricket and how it connects India with the world. He mentioned that new countries are now stepping forward to play cricket, underlining the sport’s increasing popularity and influence. He noted that the stadium in Varanasi, a city often referred to as ‘Mahadev,’ will be dedicated to Lord Shiva himself.

With a seating capacity of nearly 30,000 spectators, the stadium boasts a distinctive design.

  • The roof covers will take the shape of crescents.
  • Floodlights will resemble tridents.
  • The seating arrangement will mimic the steps of Varanasi’s iconic ghats.
  • The metallic sheets on the facade will be shaped like Bel leaves.

One of the most captivating aspects of the stadium’s design is its reflection of the “essence of Kashi.” It not only serves as a sports venue but also as a symbol of the city’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.

The momentous ceremony saw cricket icons such as Sachin Tendulkar, Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, and Dilip Vengsarkar in attendance, alongside key BCCI figures including President Roger Binny, Vice President Rajiv Shukla, and Secretary Jay Shah. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath joined the Prime Minister in marking this historic occasion.

Completion and Future Events

The international cricket stadium, set to be located near the Ring Road in the Rajatalab area, is projected to be ready for use by December 2025. This will make it the third international cricket stadium in Uttar Pradesh, following those in Kanpur and Lucknow.

PM Modi’s visit to Varanasi also included the inauguration of 16 newly constructed Atal Residential Schools, further emphasizing the government’s commitment to education and sports development. The day was a celebration of progress, culture, and sportsmanship in the heart of Kashi.
