In a significant outcome at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Left-backed candidates claimed three of the four central panel positions in the recently concluded Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), affiliated with the RSS, broke a nine-year dry spell by winning the post of joint secretary.
According to the results announced early Monday by the JNUSU Election Commission, Nitish Kumar of the All India Students’ Association (AISA) was elected president with 1,702 votes. The post of vice-president went to Manisha from the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), who secured 1,150 votes. Munteha Fatima, also supported by the Left bloc, won the general secretary post with 1,520 votes.
Meanwhile, Vaibhav Meena from the ABVP clinched the post of joint secretary after garnering 1,518 votes, marking ABVP’s return to the central panel after nearly a decade.
This year’s elections saw a realignment within the Left forces. AISA and DSF contested together, while the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) joined hands with the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA) and the Progressive Students’ Association (PSA) to form a separate coalition. The ABVP fought the elections independently.
Polling took place on April 25, with 5,500 out of 7,906 eligible students casting their votes, reflecting a strong turnout.
