Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit West Bengal on Thursday, marking his first visit to the state following the launch of ‘Operation Sindoor’. During the trip, he will lay the foundation stone for a major City Gas Distribution (CGD) project and address a public rally in Alipurduar district, according to senior BJP leaders.
State BJP president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar shared that both the government programme and the party rally will take place in neighboring locations within the district. “The Prime Minister will first participate in the government event and then address BJP workers and supporters in a public meeting,” Majumdar said. “He will later depart for Patna in the evening.”
PM Modi is expected to arrive in West Bengal from Sikkim shortly after 1 PM.
The CGD project, which spans Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts, carries an investment of over ₹1,010 crore. The initiative aims to supply Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to more than 2.5 lakh households and over 100 commercial and industrial units. Additionally, around 19 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations are planned under the project to cater to vehicular fuel demands, as per the government’s Minimum Work Program (MWP) guidelines.
According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, the CGD project is expected to bring significant benefits to the region by providing a clean, cost-effective, and reliable energy source, while also creating employment opportunities.
‘Operation Sindoor’, launched on May 7, was India’s response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. Under the operation, precision strikes were carried out on terror infrastructure located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
With the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections on the horizon, the BJP hopes the Prime Minister’s address will energize the party cadre and boost public support. “We aim to take the Prime Minister’s message to every home in the state,” said another BJP leader.
