Integrated farming systems and the value addition of agricultural products are essential strategies to enhance the profitability of agriculture, according to Chintala Govinda Rajulu, former Chairman of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). Speaking at the Uzhave Thalai conclave in Coimbatore on Saturday, he emphasized the need for innovative approaches to increase farm incomes.
Focus on Existing Farm Holdings
Addressing farmers at the event, organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, as part of Agri Intex, Rajulu highlighted the necessity of improving profitability within the constraints of current farm holdings. “In some regions, doubling farmers’ income is not a significant issue, but there are notable challenges in other areas,” he noted.
Wealth from Agricultural Waste
Rajulu pointed out that the government is currently prioritizing the creation of wealth from agricultural waste. “It is crucial to eliminate the drudgery associated with farming and ensure its sustainability. Numerous innovations are emerging in the agricultural startup sector,” he said. Rajulu stressed the importance of making agriculture both profitable and productive to retain farmers in the industry, and underscored the need for technology-driven agricultural practices in the future.
Innovative Uses for Agro Products
Cibi B. Anand, chairman of the event, discussed the potential for increasing farmers’ incomes through the production of banana and bamboo fibers for the textile industry, promoting inter-cropping on coconut farms, and adding value to agricultural products.

The event also saw contributions from B. Sriramulu, President of the Chamber, and M. Karthikeyan, President of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA), who both reiterated the importance of innovation and value addition in agriculture for the economic upliftment of farmers.
