The highly anticipated romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf, featuring Rajkumar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, will now bypass a theatrical release and debut directly on Prime Video on May 16. Originally slated to hit cinemas on May 9, the film’s big-screen launch has been called off in response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
Decision in Light of National Sentiment
In a joint statement, the film’s producers, Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios, emphasized that the move was driven by recent events and security concerns. “In light of recent events and the heightened security drills across the nation, we at Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios have decided to bring our family entertainer, Bhool Chuk Maaf, directly to your homes on May 16—only on Prime Video, worldwide,” the statement read. “While we were eagerly looking forward to celebrating this film with you in theaters, the spirit of the nation comes first.”
Cast Voices Support
Lead actor Rajkummar Rao expressed his solidarity with the government’s decision and reflected on the emotional weight of recent developments. Speaking to Hindustan Times, he said, “Whatever decision that our administration is taking, we are with them in it, because what has happened, should not have happened. It made us all very, very angry, very sad. So absolutely we are in it together as a nation and we are extremely proud of our armed forces.”
His co-star, Wamiqa Gabbi, echoed his sentiments, affirming that she and her fellow cast members fully support the shift in release plans. “That’s exactly how all three of us—Rajkummar, Karan, and I—are feeling. The whole nation is feeling it. And yeah, we are with them. Hum hi toh hain. So definitely, in whatever way we can, we stand with the nation.”
A Light-Hearted Tale in Serious Times
Set in the culturally rich city of Varanasi, Bhool Chuk Maaf tells the story of Ranjan (Rao), a kind-hearted man dreaming of a life with his beloved Titli (Gabbi). Just as their wedding day approaches, Ranjan finds himself trapped in a time loop, reliving the same day repeatedly. The film combines humor and heart, promising a unique blend of romance and fantasy.
Despite the change in release strategy, fans can look forward to enjoying the film from home next week, as Bhool Chuk Maaf begins streaming globally on Prime Video starting May 16.
