Maha Saptami, the seventh day of Durga Puja, will be observed this year on 29 September 2025. Falling in the Shukla Paksha of the Ashwin month, it marks the beginning of the most awaited phase of the festival. According to the Hindu calendar, the Saptami Tithi will commence on 28 September at 2:27 PM and conclude on 29 September at 4:31 PM.
Why Saptami is Significant
Maha Saptami is considered the symbolic start of Goddess Durga’s divine battle against Mahishasura, the demon king. This struggle, remembered as the triumph of good over evil, culminates with Vijaya Dashami. On this day, Maa Durga is especially worshipped in her fierce form, Kaalratri, believed to destroy fear, remove negativity, and clear obstacles from the lives of her devotees.
Key Rituals of the Day
The day begins with the Nabapatrika Puja, where nine sacred plants are tied together, bathed in holy water, and worshipped as manifestations of Maa Durga’s power. Devotees also perform elaborate Shodashopachara Puja, offering flowers, incense, fruits, and sweets. In several regions, the atmosphere is charged with drum beats (dhak), chanting of mantras, and devotional processions that bring communities together.
Celebrations Across India
Although Durga Puja is celebrated nationwide, Maha Saptami holds special cultural importance in eastern states such as West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, and Tripura. Here, pandals display magnificent idols and artistic decorations, while cultural performances and traditional feasts add to the festive spirit. Families and communities come together in prayer, music, and food, strengthening bonds of faith and togetherness. Elsewhere in India, devotees observe fasting, recite mantras, and dress in auspicious attire to honor the Goddess.
Message of Maha Saptami
Beyond rituals and festivities, Maha Saptami carries a timeless message: with courage, faith, and resilience, one can overcome adversity. It is not only a religious observance but also a reminder of the enduring power of positivity and inner strength.
As millions prepare to welcome the Goddess on this auspicious day, Maha Saptami continues to inspire devotion and unity, celebrating the eternal victory of light over darkness.
