Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, is currently on a two-day visit to London, engaging in a series of high-level meetings aimed at enhancing investment links and boosting bilateral trade between India and the United Kingdom.
On the first day of his visit, Goyal met several key industry leaders to discuss new opportunities for collaboration. He held talks with Martin Gilbert, Chairperson of the Revolut App, focusing on the dynamic growth of India’s fintech sector. The two emphasized the critical role global partnerships can play in fostering innovation and driving the sector’s expansion.
Taking to social media, Goyal shared, “Met with Mr. Martin Gilbert, Chairperson, @RevolutApp. Exchanged views on the immense opportunities in India’s fintech ecosystem and the importance of partnerships with global players to drive innovation and growth.”
In addition, Goyal met with Al Cook, CEO of De Beers Group, and his team to discuss global trends in the gems and jewellery sector. The conversation covered sustainable practices, India’s emerging opportunities in the industry, and the future prospects for the diamond business.
Later in the evening, the minister interacted with members of the Indian business delegation during a dinner meeting. Discussions revolved around the robust growth of Indian industries and the exploration of new avenues for collaboration with the UK to ensure mutual economic prosperity.
“Interacted with members of the Indian business delegation over dinner. Discussed the robust growth of our industry and avenues for greater collaboration with the UK for mutual prosperity,” Goyal shared in another social media post.
Upon arriving in London, Goyal also met with Jonathan Reynolds, the UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade. Their discussions aimed at advancing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the UK.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that talks on the FTA are being relaunched. Addressing a press briefing on April 9, Jaiswal stated, “The FTA talks with the UK are in the process of being relaunched, and both sides remain committed to taking it forward. If my memory serves me right, think seven rounds have happened. This will be the eighth round, and both sides are keen to conclude this or take these negotiations forward so that we can have an early conclusion of the FTA talks.”
Goyal’s London visit highlights the growing momentum in India-UK economic relations, with both countries striving for deeper trade ties and greater investment opportunities.
