Maharashtra is bracing for heavy rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple weather alerts across the state, coinciding with the early arrival of the southwest monsoon. The monsoon reached Mumbai on Monday, almost two weeks ahead of its usual schedule, marking one of the earliest onsets in recent memory.
According to the IMD, a heavy rain warning has been issued for Mumbai over the next 24 hours, accompanied by an orange alert for Pune. Additionally, a red alert has been sounded for the districts of Satara, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Kolhapur, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall.
In Mumbai, residents can expect a cloudy sky and heavy showers, with temperatures fluctuating between 24°C and 31°C. The city is likely to see waterlogging and traffic disruptions due to the expected downpour.
The IMD’s subdivision-wise forecast reveals a promising monsoon outlook for Maharashtra. All four of the state’s meteorological regions — Konkan & Goa, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha — are predicted to receive above-average rainfall from June to September. Specifically, Central Maharashtra and Marathwada are forecasted to receive 110% and 112% of their usual rainfall, respectively. Vidarbha is expected to receive 109% and Konkan & Goa around 107% of normal rainfall.
This trend aligns with the broader forecast for Central and South Peninsular India, where above-normal rainfall is expected. The monsoon core zone, crucial for rain-fed agriculture, is also anticipated to benefit from increased precipitation.
June is likely to bring higher-than-normal rainfall across Maharashtra, although certain areas in Konkan, Marathwada, and Vidarbha may see rainfall closer to seasonal averages.
Pune 5-Day Weather Outlook
For Pune, the forecast suggests consistently wet conditions over the coming days. From May 29 to June 2, the city is expected to experience mostly cloudy skies and daily rainfall, with temperatures ranging between 22°C and 30°C. Moderate rainfall is anticipated on May 29, followed by lighter showers on May 30 and 31. Rain activity is likely to intensify again on June 1 and 2, maintaining damp weather conditions and stable temperatures throughout the period.
Residents across the state are advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions as the monsoon strengthens its hold.
