Parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region woke up to heavy showers on Thursday morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to upgrade its earlier yellow alert to a red warning for the day.
Residents in Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram reported intense rainfall in the early hours, with visuals showing waterlogged streets in several areas, including Basai Road in Gurugram. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall across most locations, with certain pockets likely to receive heavy showers over the next two to three hours.
“Light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places, with moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Delhi and NCR during the next 2–3 hours,” the weather department stated in its morning bulletin. According to district-wise nowcast warnings, the red alert for intense rainfall remains in effect until 8:30 am.
The fresh downpour comes just days after widespread heavy rain across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and adjoining areas earlier this week, which caused significant disruptions, including multiple flight delays and cancellations on Tuesday.
Beyond the capital region, the IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, northern Madhya Pradesh, and western Uttar Pradesh in the coming hours.
