The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised alarm bells for Mumbai and neighboring regions in Maharashtra, including Raigad and Thane, as a scorching heatwave grips the area. The warning, spanning today and tomorrow, cautions residents against temperatures soaring between 36-38 degrees Celsius on April 15 and 16.
Mumbai, Raigad, and Thane: Bracing for Sweltering Heat
In its latest forecast, the IMD highlights the likelihood of heatwave conditions engulfing Mumbai and adjacent districts of Maharashtra. With temperatures expected to hover around 39°C and 24°C, the city and its suburbs are urged to prepare for blistering heat on Monday and Tuesday, April 15 and 16.
Spread of Heatwave Across India
The IMD’s warning extends beyond Maharashtra, encompassing North Goa, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal. In North Goa, intense heatwave conditions are forecasted for Monday and Tuesday, while Odisha braces for scorching temperatures until April 19.
Telangana is also on high alert, with several areas expected to experience high temperatures and isolated pockets facing heatwave conditions on April 17 and 18. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are anticipated to witness heatwave conditions from April 16 to 18, raising concerns for residents’ well-being.
Gangetic West Bengal on High Alert
Gangetic West Bengal joins the roster of regions facing extreme weather conditions, with isolated pockets likely to experience heatwave conditions from April 17 to 19. The IMD‘s warning underscores the importance of preparedness and precautions to mitigate the impact of soaring temperatures.
Yellow Alert in Kerala: Preparing for High Temperatures
Meanwhile, Kerala grapples with a yellow alert issued by the IMD for several districts, signaling the possibility of unprecedented high temperatures. Thiruvananthapuram is expected to bear the brunt, with mercury levels forecasted to soar to 36°C from April 15 to 17, exceeding the normal range by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius.
The alert extends across various districts, with Kollam, Thrissur, and Palakkad projected to experience temperatures around 39°C. Meanwhile, Kozhikode and Kannur may witness highs of 38°C. Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Kasargod remain on heightened vigilance, with temperatures likely to peak around 37°C.
