
The Government of India has extended the application deadline for its flagship housing scheme, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), till December 2025, providing a renewed opportunity for economically weaker sections of society to own a permanent home. The scheme, which targets both urban and rural populations, offers subsidised housing to ensure “Housing for All”.
Over 92 Lakh Houses Delivered
As per official data from the PMAY portal, more than 92.61 lakh houses have already been completed under the scheme, significantly improving living conditions for countless families across India who previously lived in temporary or inadequate housing.
Who Can Apply?
PMAY is divided into two components:
- PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U): For residents in urban areas.
- PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G): For those living in rural parts of the country.
Urban Eligibility Criteria
To qualify under PMAY-U, applicants must fall under one of the following categories and must not own a pucca house anywhere in India:
- Economically Weaker Section (EWS): Income up to ₹3 lakh per annum
- Lower Income Group (LIG): Income between ₹3 lakh and ₹6 lakh
- Middle Income Group (MIG-I): Income between ₹6 lakh and ₹9 lakh
- Slum dwellers: Residents of slums or informal settlements
Target Urban Beneficiaries
The scheme targets:
- Urban poor including rickshaw pullers, daily wage labourers, street vendors, and industrial workers
- Migrant workers from EWS and LIG
- Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), minorities, and widows from low-income households
Rural Eligibility Criteria
For PMAY-G, priority is given to:
- Households listed in the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC)
- Families living in zero, one, or two-room kutcha houses
Ineligible Rural Applicants:
Those excluded from PMAY-G include families that:
- Own a pucca house
- Possess motorised vehicles or mechanised agricultural tools
- Hold a Kisan Credit Card with a limit over ₹50,000
- Have government-employed family members
- Own consumer durables like refrigerators or landline phones
- Own large tracts of irrigated land
Target Rural Beneficiaries
The rural scheme is meant for:
- SC/ST households
- Homeless individuals
- Manual scavengers
- Bonded labourers
- Primitive tribal groups and destitutes

For PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U)
- Visit the official PMAY-U 2.0 website
- Click on ‘Apply for PMAY-U 2.0’
- Read and accept instructions
- Keep required documents ready and proceed
- Fill the eligibility form and verify Aadhaar with OTP
- Complete the application form
- Upload documents and submit
For PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G)
- Go to the PMAY-G portal
- Enter your personal details and upload consent form
- Select your name from the search results
- Fill in bank and scheme-related details
- Submit the form for final verification by the local office
