The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a flash flood alert for Sunday, August 17, across Maharashtra’s Konkan belt, including Mumbai, amid heavy rainfall predictions.
According to the IMD’s 24-hour Flash Flood Risk (FFR) outlook, valid till 11:30 a.m. on August 17, a moderate to high risk of flash floods is expected over several watersheds and adjoining areas in Mumbai City, Suburban Mumbai, Palghar, Raigarh, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, as well as North and South Goa.
Officials warned that inundation is likely in low-lying regions and areas with already saturated soil, which could worsen waterlogging conditions. The department has urged residents to remain cautious, avoid venturing into flooded zones, and follow local administration advisories.
For Mumbai and its suburbs, the forecast suggests heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds of 40–60 kmph on Sunday morning. Similar weather conditions are anticipated across coastal Maharashtra, Goa, and parts of Gujarat over the next seven days.
“Extremely heavy downpours are particularly likely over Konkan, Goa, and the ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra between August 16 and 19,” the IMD said in its release.
Authorities have been placed on alert, with disaster management teams prepared for possible evacuation and rescue operations if flash floods occur. Commuters in Mumbai are advised to plan their travel cautiously, as suburban train services and road traffic could face disruptions.
