Adani Enterprises Ltd. (AEL) has secured a major contract from the National Highways Logistics Management Ltd. (NHLML) to construct a ropeway connecting Sonprayag with the Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand. The project, valued at ₹4,081 crore, will be handled by the company’s Roads, Metro, Rail, and Water (RMRW) division.
Planned under the Centre’s National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana, the 12.9-kilometre ropeway will be built through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Once completed, the facility will cut travel time to Kedarnath from nearly nine hours of trekking to just 36 minutes.
Designed to handle 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, the project is expected to benefit the nearly 20 lakh devotees who visit Kedarnath annually. According to the company, construction will take six years, after which AEL will operate and maintain the ropeway for 29 years.
Besides easing access to the Himalayan shrine, the project is anticipated to create jobs and enhance tourism in the region.
Commenting on the development, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani described the initiative as a blend of spirituality and infrastructure. “The Kedarnath ropeway will make the pilgrimage safer, faster, and more inclusive, while also generating new opportunities for Uttarakhand’s people. This reflects our commitment to building infrastructure that not only connects places but uplifts communities,” he said.
