Aboa Space Research Oy (ASRO) of Finland and U.S.-based Ethereal Space, Inc. have announced a new strategic partnership aimed at strengthening space weather monitoring capabilities. The initiative, supported by the European Space Agency’s (ESA) ScaleUp Invest program, will combine advanced particle detection instruments with a satellite constellation designed for continuous global coverage.
The collaboration brings together ASRO’s expertise in energetic charged particle instrumentation with Ethereal Space’s rapidly developing fleet of small satellites. The joint effort is intended to enhance real-time tracking of high-energy particles in near-Earth space, a key factor in predicting and mitigating the effects of solar storms.
“Space weather has a growing influence on satellites, aviation, navigation systems, and even terrestrial power grids,” said Jussi Lehti, CEO of ASRO. “By deploying our sensors on scalable platforms, we can provide high-accuracy data that helps safeguard critical infrastructure.”
Ethereal Space CEO Shawn Cochran emphasized that the partnership expands their ability to deliver actionable information to both government agencies and commercial operators. “Our constellation is designed for operational resilience,” he noted. “Equipping it with ASRO’s technology ensures that our customers receive continuous, high-quality datasets for space weather forecasting and nowcasting.”
Monitoring energetic charged particles in situ—directly in space—is considered essential to improving predictive models. Broader global measurement coverage is expected to reduce uncertainty, support timely alerts of solar activity, and increase resilience against disruptions caused by severe space weather.
By leveraging ESA’s ScaleUp Invest program, which encourages commercial solutions in the space sector, the partnership marks a significant step in translating scientific advancements into operational services.
