Gujarat continues to be a leader in India’s textile industry, yet experts assert that innovation and the adoption of new technologies are crucial for accelerated growth, especially in the competitive export market. The industry’s strong foundation presents ample opportunities for new entrepreneurs ready to embrace swift changes. This was the central theme at the Textile Leadership Conclave 2024, organized by the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) on Saturday.
Historical Context and Current Challenges
Hasmukh Patel, Member of Parliament and president of the Textile Association of India (Ahmedabad unit), remarked on the industry’s past prominence. “The textile industry had a much higher share in total production and exports till 2000, but due to slow policy decisions, its share in India’s exports decreased. Many composite mills closed due to lack of labour reforms and new technology,” he said.
Government Initiatives and Future Prospects
In recent years, the central government has introduced various measures to revitalize the sector. A significant development is the establishment of a large PM Mitra Park in South Gujarat, dedicated to textiles. Patel highlighted the global trend towards man-made fibers, which constitute 70% of global textile production, compared to India’s 70% reliance on natural fibers. “There is a need to increase the share of man-made fibres,” he emphasized.
GCCI’s Continued Commitment
GCCI president Ajay Patel affirmed the chamber’s dedication to the industry’s growth. “The textile industry has seen rapid growth in Gujarat, and we will continue to organize such conclaves to make the industry aware of the new rules of business,” he stated.
Employment and Technical Textiles
Saurin Parikh, chairman of the GCCI textile taskforce, underscored the industry’s significant employment contribution. “The textile industry provides direct employment to 4.5 crore people and indirect employment to 12 crore people. We believe greater emphasis needs to be given to technical textiles for quicker growth,” he noted.
Path Forward
The conclave concluded with a consensus on the need for continuous innovation and technological adoption. Industry leaders are optimistic that with strategic initiatives and a focus on modern fibers and technical textiles, Gujarat’s textile industry can reclaim its historic global competitiveness and achieve sustainable growth.
