Telecom service provider Airtel experienced a significant network disruption on Tuesday evening, leaving thousands of users across South India unable to make voice calls. The issue, which began around 7:00 pm, primarily impacted regions in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, and parts of Karnataka.
Users from cities such as Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Madurai took to social media platforms like X to express frustration over call connectivity problems. While the voice network appeared to be down, most users reported that mobile data services remained functional during the disruption.
According to data from Downdetector, a website that tracks service outages, more than 8,400 reports related to Airtel’s network issues had been logged by 9:00 pm. A heat map from the platform highlighted concentrated outages in major southern cities, indicating a regional scope to the disruption.
Acknowledging the problem, Airtel issued an official statement confirming the service interruption. “We regret to inform that Airtel is currently facing a temporary network disruption in certain areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Our technical teams are diligently working to address the issue and restore services as quickly as possible,” an Airtel spokesperson said.
As of 10:00 pm, many users were still unable to make calls, with reports indicating that full restoration had not yet been achieved. The company has not provided an estimated time for when services will be completely back to normal.
Customers are advised to remain patient while technical teams work to resolve the issue.
