Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) Scheme 2023-24 Series II Opens Today: Here’s All You Need to Know Before Investing

Sovereign Gold Bond

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has once again opened the door for investors to participate in the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) Scheme 2023-24 Series II. This government-supported initiative presents an exceptional and convenient avenue for individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), trusts, universities, and charitable institutions to invest in gold. In this article, we will delve into the details of the latest SGB series, the benefits it offers, and why it’s a compelling investment option.

SGB Issue Price and Subscription Period

The RBI has set the issue price of the Sovereign Gold Bond for the September 2023 series at โ‚น5,923 per gram. This attractive price makes it an enticing option for gold enthusiasts and investors. The subscription period for this series runs from September 11, 2023, to September 15, 2023.

Investing in Gold without Physical Possession

The SGB scheme is tailored to offer investors a safe and hassle-free means of possessing gold without requiring physical custody. These bonds are denominated in one-gram increments of gold and are issued accordingly. The minimum investment allowed is one gram, with a maximum limit of 500 grams per individual per fiscal year (April to March).

Discounted Prices for Online Investors

In collaboration with the Reserve Bank, the Government of India offers a discount of โ‚น50 per gram below the face value to investors who apply online and complete the payment through digital channels. This means that online investors can acquire SGBs at an issue price of โ‚น5,873 per gram of gold.

Interest and Redemption

Sovereign Gold Bonds come with an eight-year tenure and provide an annual interest rate of 2.5 per cent. Interest is disbursed biannually, in June and December, while at maturity, the bonds are redeemed based on the current market price of gold.

Channels for Purchase

Investors have various channels through which they can purchase SGBs, including banks, the Stock Holding Corporation of India Ltd (SHCIL), designated post offices, and recognized stock exchanges, such as the NSE and the BSE.

Eligible Investors

This scheme is specifically accessible for purchase by resident individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), trusts, universities, and charitable organizations.

Investment Limits

Specific maximum investment limits are imposed based on the investor category. For individuals and HUFs, the maximum investment cap is set at 4 kg of gold per fiscal year. This limit applies cumulatively across different tranches within the same financial year.

Redemption Details

The SGB’s redemption value is calculated by taking the simple average of the closing prices of gold with 999 purity from the three preceding working days. SGBs mature after an eight-year tenure, but they can be redeemed prematurely, beginning from the fifth year, with a penalty for early redemption.

Key Benefits of Sovereign Gold Bonds

  • High Purity: SGB bonds represent the value of gold in 99.9 per cent purity, ensuring investors receive pure gold without impurities.
  • Tax Benefits: SGBs are exempt from capital gains tax at maturity, making them a tax-efficient investment option.
  • Collateral for Loans: SGBs can be used as collateral for loans, subject to the decision of financial institutions.
  • Tradable on Exchanges: SGBs are tradable on stock exchanges, offering liquidity and flexibility.
  • Interest Rate: SGBs not only offer gold price-linked returns but also provide an additional 2.5 per cent per annum interest on the invested amount.
  • Maturity Return: Investors receive the ongoing market price of gold at the time of redemption, ensuring they benefit from price appreciation.
  • No Default Risk: SGBs come with a government guarantee, eliminating default risk
  • Demat Form: SGBs can be held in demat form, enhancing security.

Why Invest in SGBs Now?

Several compelling reasons make investing in SGBs an attractive proposition:

  • Global Central Bank Demand: Central banks worldwide are accumulating gold due to economic uncertainties, indicating gold’s status as a haven asset.
  • Expected End of Rate Hikes: Anticipations of the US central bank nearing the end of its interest rate hike cycle bode well for gold, as higher interest rates tend to suppress gold prices.
  • Hedge Against Economic Uncertainty: Concerns about a weakening global economy continue to drive interest in gold as a hedge against inflation and instability.
  • Attractive Entry Point: Gold prices have corrected from their peak, presenting an opportunity for investors to add gold to their portfolios gradually.

Sovereign Gold Bonds offer a unique opportunity to invest in gold with security and convenience. With favourable pricing, discounts for online investors, and a range of benefits including interest earnings and tax exemptions, SGBs present an attractive investment avenue. As central banks worldwide accumulate gold, economic uncertainties persist, and gold prices remain stable, SGBs are a smart choice for diversifying portfolios and safeguarding wealth. Consider exploring this investment option in the September 2023 series to secure your financial future.
