Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a visit to Thailand on Thursday to participate in the sixth BIMSTEC Summit, highlighting India’s commitment to regional cooperation and economic growth. Following the summit, he is set to travel to Sri Lanka, marking his first visit to the island nation since its new leadership took office.
Before his departure, PM Modi emphasized the significance of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), describing it as a crucial platform for enhancing regional development and connectivity. He underscored India’s northeastern region as central to BIMSTEC due to its strategic geographical positioning.
“I look forward to meeting the leaders of BIMSTEC countries and engaging in meaningful discussions to strengthen our collaboration, keeping the interests of our people at the forefront,” Modi stated.
During his stay in Thailand, the Prime Minister will engage with his Thai counterpart, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, and other senior leaders to further enhance the longstanding historical and cultural ties between the two nations. Their discussions will focus on fostering bilateral relations in trade, connectivity, and shared heritage.
Following the summit, PM Modi will head to Sri Lanka for a two-day visit starting April 4. His visit follows Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s trip to India in December last year, during which both countries outlined a joint vision titled “Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future.” The upcoming discussions will focus on assessing the progress made under this vision and charting the way forward for deeper cooperation.
Expressing optimism about his visits, Modi stated that they would further strengthen India’s relationships with the BIMSTEC nations and contribute to the region’s overall growth and stability.
These diplomatic engagements are expected to bolster India’s regional outreach, enhancing economic and strategic partnerships in the Bay of Bengal region.
