Dharmendra Deol: Indian cinema today bid farewell to one of its most enduring icons. Veteran actor Dharmendra, affectionately known as Bollywood’s “He-Man,” passed away on Monday (November 24, 2025) at the age of 89, leaving the film fraternity and fans across the world in mourning.
A towering figure in Hindi cinema for more than six decades, Dharmendra starred in over 300 films and became one of the industry’s most loved personalities. From intense action roles to heartfelt comedies and romances, his performances in classics such as Sholay, Phool Aur Patthar, Satyakam, and Chupke Chupke cemented his place among the greatest actors of Indian cinema.
Born Dharam Singh Deol in 1935 in Punjab, he began his journey from modest beginnings and rose to become one of Bollywood’s most recognisable faces. Known for his rugged charm, impeccable comic timing, and emotional depth, Dharmendra enjoyed an illustrious career that spanned generations. He was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and remained an inspiration for actors who followed.
Tributes poured in soon after the news of his passing broke. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it “the end of an era,” describing Dharmendra as an artist who “brought joy to millions.” Filmmaker Karan Johar, who worked with him recently, said his warmth and kindness “will be missed beyond words.”
The actor’s funeral was held in Mumbai, where family members, colleagues, and friends gathered to pay their final respects. Many from the industry, who shared the screen with him, laughed with him, and learned from him, stood in silence as one of Bollywood’s most cherished stars was laid to rest.
Dharmendra’s final film, Ikkis, is slated for release on December 25, 2025. But for millions of admirers, his legacy has long been immortal. His contribution to cinema, his humility, and the affection he carried for his fans ensured a place for him not just in film history but in countless hearts.
As the nation mourns, Indian cinema remembers a hero who lived larger than the roles he portrayed. Dharmendra is survived by his family, who have requested privacy during this difficult time.
