Members of the Geelong West Fire Brigade responded to a call for assistance in combating a wildfire. However, a sudden shift in wind direction, fueled by a cold front, led to the devastating loss of five firefighters: Garry Vredeveldt, Christopher Evans, Stuart Davidson, Jason Thomas, and Matthew Armstrong. This heartbreaking event prompted the establishment of International Firefighters’ Day in their memory.
