Gold prices opened slightly higher on Tuesday, August 19, as investors tracked global developments, including the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which raised hopes of an easing in geopolitical tensions.
On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), Gold October 3 contracts were up 0.04 per cent at ₹99,440 per 10 grams at 10:52 am. In contrast, Silver September 5 contracts slipped 0.32 per cent to ₹1,13,230 per kg.
Gold and Silver’s Two-Decade Performance
Over the past 20 years, gold has delivered impressive returns, rising nearly 1,200 per cent from ₹7,638 in 2005 to over ₹1,00,000 in 2025 (till June). Out of these two decades, gold has ended in the green for 16 years, reinforcing its position as a safe-haven asset. So far in 2025, gold has climbed 31 per cent year-to-date (YTD), making it one of the best-performing asset classes this year.
Silver too has shown resilience, sustaining prices above ₹1 lakh per kg in recent months. Since 2005, its value has surged by nearly 669 per cent, highlighting its long-term strength.

- 24-carat gold: ₹99,670 per 10 gms
- 22-carat gold: ₹91,364 per 10 gms
- Silver (999 Fine): ₹1,13,790 per kg
