North India is set to endure sweltering heat with temperatures likely to approach 44°C, while eastern and southern regions can expect rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in the coming days, according to the latest weather forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In its updated bulletin, the IMD outlined a mixed weather pattern across various parts of the country for the week ahead.
Heavy Rains in Northeast
The northeastern states will continue to experience light to moderate rainfall over the next seven days. The forecast predicts heavy downpours in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya between June 9 and 12. Tripura is likely to receive heavy rain on June 6 and 7, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may face similar conditions from June 9 to 11.
Thunderstorms Across East and Central India
Eastern and central parts of India are also in for a wet spell. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim will see ongoing light to moderate showers. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (40–50 km/h) are forecasted for Madhya Pradesh on June 6 and 7. Similar weather is expected in Odisha, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh from June 6 to 10, as well as in Bihar and Jharkhand between June 10 and 12.
Isolated Rain in Northwest; Heatwave Looms
Isolated rainfall is likely over East Rajasthan from June 6 to 8, and in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from June 11 to 12. West Rajasthan could experience dust-raising winds (30–40 km/h) from June 8 to 10.
However, the main concern for North India is the approaching heatwave. West Rajasthan is expected to face extreme heat between June 8 and 10. Parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh are likely to experience heatwave conditions from June 9 to 10.
Showers Continue in the South
Southern India is set for light to moderate rainfall in areas such as Kerala, Mahe, and coastal Karnataka. Thunderstorms with gusty winds (30–40 km/h) are also anticipated across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, and Karnataka between June 6 and 10.
Hot and humid conditions will persist in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.
Delhi-NCR to Witness Scorching Days Ahead
After a relatively wet start to June, the Delhi-NCR region is bracing for a sharp temperature rise. The IMD forecasts clear skies and dry westerly winds, which are expected to drive the mercury upwards.
Temperatures in the capital are likely to reach 39–41°C on Saturday and climb to 40–42°C on Sunday. The heat is expected to intensify early next week, with temperatures nearing 43°C on Monday and potentially touching 44°C by Tuesday.
While the monsoon has progressed rapidly this year, meteorologists note that its advance has temporarily paused. Showers may return to Delhi-NCR around June 11 or 12. In the meantime, rising temperatures are expected to dominate the region’s weather.
No official heatwave warning or colour-coded alert has been issued for Delhi-NCR yet, but residents are advised to take necessary precautions during this hot spell.
