Retaliatory Spiral in Middle East Must End, Urges UN Chief Amid Reported Strikes on Iran

The United Nations Secretary-General has issued a stern condemnation of reported retaliatory strikes on Iran, urging an immediate end to the retaliatory spiral that threatens to engulf the entire Middle East in further conflict. In a statement issued by his office, the Secretary-General called on the international community to work together to prevent any escalation that could have devastating consequences for the region and beyond.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that there was no damage to Iran’s nuclear sites following unconfirmed media reports of possible drone strikes targeting the Iranian province of Isfahan, which is home to nuclear facilities and military garrisons. IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi reiterated the call for extreme restraint from all parties, emphasizing that nuclear facilities should never be targets in military conflicts.

UN Human Rights Office Calls for De-escalation

The UN human rights office (OHCHR) also called for de-escalation, urging all parties to take immediate steps to reduce tensions in the region. The OHCHR spokesperson emphasized the need for third states, particularly those with influence, to do everything in their power to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Meanwhile, in Gaza, aid teams have reported a worsening humanitarian crisis, particularly for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. The destruction of vital medical equipment and widespread dehydration, malnutrition, and fear among Palestinians have led to a significant increase in complicated births, according to the UN sexual and reproductive health agency (UNFPA).

The UNFPA has called for urgent action to address the dire situation in Gaza, including the repair of damaged hospitals and the provision of essential medical supplies. The international community has been urged to step up efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region and prevent further humanitarian suffering.

The situation in the Middle East remains volatile, with the risk of further escalation looming large. The UN and other international organizations are continuing their efforts to address the crisis and bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
