IMD Issues Rainfall and Thunderstorm Alerts Across Several States Amid Multiple Cyclonic Circulations

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued widespread weather warnings across various regions of the country as five cyclonic circulations have formed, triggering unstable weather patterns. Rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected to impact several states through May 11.

According to the IMD, five significant cyclonic circulations are currently influencing India’s weather:

These systems are likely to cause fairly widespread moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across the northwestern and central parts of the country. Specifically, regions including Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are expected to experience significant rainfall this week. Scattered rainfall is also predicted in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan till May 11.

In the western and central regions, rainfall is forecasted for Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat through the weekend. Similarly, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh are likely to witness moderate rainfall with thunderstorms until May 11. The IMD has warned of potential thundersqualls over West Madhya Pradesh today and over East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh through May 10.

The southern states are not exempt from these weather changes. Scattered showers, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds are expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe till May 9. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana may also experience similar conditions until May 11.

Looking ahead, a new Western Disturbance is likely to impact the Western Himalayan region from May 9 onward. In addition, the Southwest Monsoon is projected to advance into the South Andaman Sea, parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands around May 13.

Meanwhile, the IMD has also issued a heat wave alert. Isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to experience heat wave conditions on May 10 and 11. The Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand will likely continue to face intense heat through May 13. Moreover, hot and humid weather is predicted to persist today in Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe.

The IMD advises residents in affected regions to stay updated with local weather alerts and take necessary precautions during thunderstorms and heat waves.
