Heavy Rains Disrupt Flights and Daily Life in Mumbai; IMD Issues Orange Alert

Air India and IndiGo have issued travel advisories as heavy rainfall disrupted flight operations and caused widespread waterlogging in Mumbai on Monday. Passengers travelling via Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport have been urged to check flight schedules in advance and allow for additional travel time.

Air India cautioned that the intense downpour may impact departures and arrivals, recommending that flyers monitor their flight status via the airline’s official website. IndiGo also confirmed that its operations were temporarily affected due to the ongoing adverse weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai under an orange alert for the day, forecasting heavy rainfall across several parts of the city, particularly South Mumbai and the western suburbs. According to the IMD, the heaviest rainfall occurred between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., leading to waterlogging in many low-lying areas.

The seven-day IMD forecast suggests that Monday’s weather pattern may persist into Tuesday, with cloudy skies and continued heavy showers expected. Authorities have warned of possible localised flooding and traffic congestion, advising residents to remain vigilant and avoid waterlogged zones.

From Wednesday onward, the intensity of rainfall is likely to ease, with intermittent showers predicted and no active alerts in place.

Municipal officials have deployed emergency response teams across vulnerable areas, while traffic police are managing diversions where necessary. As daily routines face significant disruption, Mumbaikars are once again reminded to stay updated on weather advisories and exercise caution during commutes.
