DoT Suspends 24,229 Fraudulent Mobile Connections Linked to Three Numbers

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced the suspension of 24,228 mobile connections and 42 unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers due to suspected fraudulent activities. These connections were linked to just three mobile numbers, highlighting a significant case of fraudulent mobile usage.

Public Complaints Drive Action

The disconnection follows complaints lodged by the general public via the government’s Chaksu portal. This portal, operational since March, empowers citizens to report suspicious mobile numbers associated with fraudulent communication received through calls, SMS, or social media platforms like WhatsApp. Upon receiving a complaint, the portal triggers a re-verification process for the reported numbers. Failure to pass this re-verification results in the disconnection of the suspected numbers.

IMEI and Mobile Number Misuse

An IMEI number, which is a unique 15-digit identifier for mobile devices, plays a crucial role in tracking and verifying mobile connections. Officials from the DoT have observed a concerning trend of numerous mobile numbers being linked to a limited number of IMEI numbers. In a striking example, one of the 42 IMEIs was found to be associated with 4,146 mobile numbers.

Telecom Providers Directed to Block IMEIs

In response to this alarming discovery, the DoT has directed telecom service providers to block the identified IMEI numbers across India. This measure aims to prevent the reuse of these fraudulent devices and curb further fraudulent activities.

Part of a Broader Effort to Combat Spam

This crackdown on fraudulent mobile connections is part of the DoT’s broader 100-day agenda to tackle the rising issue of spam calls and text messages. Through multiple interventions, the department is striving to protect consumers from the nuisances and potential dangers posed by such fraudulent activities.

The DoT’s decisive action against the misuse of mobile connections and IMEI numbers underscores its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of telecommunications in India. With the continued support of the public through the Chaksu portal, the department aims to maintain a robust defense against the evolving tactics of fraudulent operators.
