Congress to launch fresh campaign for statehood restoration in J-K from April 22

The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Indian National Congress is set to launch a six-week-long campaign beginning April 22, focusing on the restoration of statehood and safeguarding the Constitution. The initiative comes in response to directives from the party’s central leadership.

Chaired by J&K Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra, a key strategy meeting was held to finalize the campaign roadmap. The movement aims to highlight what the party describes as the BJP-led Centre’s failure to uphold its promises to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“The BJP has betrayed the people on the promise of restoring statehood and has failed to empower the elected representatives to address public grievances,” a Congress spokesperson said. The campaign will seek to expose these shortcomings, the spokesperson added.

The program will kick off with a gathering of senior Congress leaders from across all districts and blocks in Jammu on April 22. This will be followed by large-scale protest rallies at the provincial level in Jammu on April 29. These rallies will voice opposition to what the Congress alleges is the Modi government’s undermining of the Constitution and its vindictive stance against political opponents.

Additionally, the Congress plans to raise public awareness on issues such as unemployment, rising inflation, and heavy taxation. The party also intends to call out what it claims are the BJP’s “divisive and communal” policies.

During the preparatory meeting, the party expressed condolences over the recent loss of lives and property due to extreme weather conditions in parts of Jammu and Kashmir. It urged the government to provide prompt and adequate relief to the affected families.

The campaign is expected to be a significant political mobilization effort in the Union Territory as the Congress intensifies its outreach in the region.
