In a momentous event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) in Delhi, christened as ‘Bharat Mandapam.’ This state-of-the-art complex, developed at a cost of approximately Rs 2,700 crore, is set to become India’s largest conference and exhibition site, boasting world-class facilities that rival some of the most iconic venues around the globe.
The ceremony commenced with Prime Minister Modi’s participation in a Havan and Puja at the India Trade Promotion Organisation complex, joined by members of his Cabinet and the dedicated construction workers who poured their efforts into bringing this ambitious project to life. Expressing gratitude and appreciation, the Prime Minister felicitated the workers and shared a momentous photograph with them, symbolizing the union of hard work and vision.
Designed collaboratively by the renowned international firm Aedas, architects of Singapore’s iconic Marina Bay Sands, and Indian firm Arcop, which played a significant role in designing the IGI Airport Terminal 3, Bharat Mandapam stands as an architectural marvel. Its elliptical shape, inspired by the shankha or conch shell, exudes an aura of tradition and modernity, complemented by elements of traditional art adorning its walls and facades.
Spanning an impressive 53,399 sq m, the complex features multi-purpose and plenary halls capable of accommodating 7,000 individuals, surpassing even the illustrious Sydney Opera House, famed for hosting 5,900 guests across its various halls. Additionally, the magnificent amphitheatre offers seating for 3,000 spectators, equivalent to three PVR theatres combined, providing an exceptional space for performances, cultural shows, and entertainment events.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his vision for India’s rising stature on the global stage, stating, “The world will witness the rising stature of India when newly built Bharat Mandapam hosts the G20 summit.” The Prime Minister emphasized the economic and tourism-related benefits this world-class centre would bring, not only fostering conference tourism but also showcasing India as a premier destination for international events.
The redevelopment of the India Trade Promotion Organisation complex is poised to make a significant impact on the conference landscape in India. With the G-20 Summit scheduled to be held at Bharat Mandapam in September, the country is set to welcome leaders from around the world, further establishing its position on the global stage.
The inaugural ceremony witnessed a gathering of around 3,000 distinguished guests, including Cabinet Ministers, industry leaders, film personalities, and other notable figures. This grand event highlighted the transformative potential of the IECC complex, offering a glimpse into the future of conference and exhibition spaces in the country.
One of the most striking aspects of the complex is its versatility, making it India’s largest MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination. Boasting multiple modern facilities, including convention centres, exhibition halls, and amphitheatres, Bharat Mandapam is set to accommodate a wide range of events, from international conferences to large-scale exhibitions and entertainment shows.
With parking facilities for over 5,500 vehicles, the complex aims to streamline accessibility, ensuring a seamless experience for visitors. The seven innovative exhibition halls provide an ideal platform for exhibitors and companies to showcase their products, innovations, and ideas, fostering business growth and networking opportunities.
Prime Minister Modi took the opportunity to condemn the negative thinking that hampers development projects, including the convention centre. He compared those opposing progress to a “toli” (group) of negative thinkers who would eventually acknowledge the magnificence of Bharat Mandapam, much like they did with the Kartavya Path.
Delhi’s new International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre, ‘Bharat Mandapam,’ marks a significant step towards shaping India’s future as a leading destination for international conferences and exhibitions. With its world-class infrastructure and grandeur, the centre is poised to attract global attention and enhance the country’s position on the global stage, boosting economic growth and tourism in the process. As the countdown begins to the G-20 Summit, the world eagerly awaits the grandeur and innovation that Bharat Mandapam promises to deliver.
