Amit Gupta, the regional head of Tech Mahindra for Qatar and Kuwait, has been arrested by Qatari authorities in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation, sources have confirmed. The arrest took place on 1 January, but as of now, no formal charges have been framed against him.
According to sources familiar with the matter, further details of the allegations will only be revealed once official charges are filed. It remains unclear whether the investigation is solely focused on Gupta or if it involves other individuals as well.
A Tech Mahindra spokesperson, in response to queries, stated, “We are in close contact with Amit Gupta’s family and are providing necessary support. We are also actively coordinating with authorities in both countries and adhering to due process. Ensuring the well-being of our colleague is our top priority.”
Gupta, who has been associated with Tech Mahindra since 2013, moved to Qatar as part of his role and was responsible for overseeing operations in the region, including Kuwait. The Indian embassy in Doha is in touch with Gupta and his legal representatives, extending all possible assistance in the case.
Meanwhile, Gupta’s family has dismissed any allegations of data theft, as reported by local media in Vadodara, Gujarat. His mother, Pushpa Gupta, suggested that the arrest may be linked to his position and broader investigations into the company. Seeking support, the family has reached out to India’s Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra. Vadodara MP Hemang Joshi has also assured them of his assistance.
Gupta’s mother reportedly traveled to Qatar to meet with Indian embassy officials but has yet to receive a satisfactory response regarding her son’s situation.
This incident marks the second high-profile case involving Indian nationals in Qatar in recent years. In 2022, eight Indian naval personnel were arrested and later sentenced to death on espionage charges, which were subsequently commuted. They were eventually pardoned by Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in February 2024, just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Doha.
The Amir of Qatar recently visited New Delhi, where both countries agreed to elevate diplomatic ties to a strategic partnership. Discussions also included a potential free trade agreement and investments worth $10 billion from Qatar’s Sovereign Wealth Fund in India.
As the investigation into Gupta’s case continues, his family, employer, and diplomatic representatives remain engaged in efforts to resolve the matter.
