IMD Issues Orange Alerts as Heavy Rainfall Batters Central and Western India

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued heavy rainfall across several states in India, triggered by an active monsoon trough and a low-pressure area currently moving west-northwestwards from Gangetic West Bengal across Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh. This has resulted in waterlogging, school closures, and widespread disruptions in affected regions.

In Nagpur, relentless rainfall caused severe waterlogging in multiple localities, prompting District Collector Vipin Itankar to announce the closure of all schools and colleges across the district on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Ayodhya also witnessed intense rainfall in the early hours, further underlining the widespread impact of the current weather system.

The IMD has placed multiple states under an Orange Alert for heavy rainfall. For July 9, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gujarat, and Telangana are under high alert. The warning continues for several of these states in the coming days, with Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh facing continuous alerts through July 12.

Mumbai Weather Outlook

Mumbai, which has already surpassed its average June rainfall, is set to see some relief. The IMD’s heavy rainfall warning for the city ends on July 9. However, a Yellow Alert remains in place for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, while Raigad continues under an Orange Alert.

From July 10 onwards, the city is expected to return to normal monsoon activity with light to moderate showers. No severe weather warnings have been issued for the region beyond this date.

The IMD’s continued alerts underscore the need for preparedness and caution, especially in regions under Orange and Yellow alerts. Residents are advised to follow local advisories and take necessary precautions as widespread rainfall and stormy weather continue to impact various parts of the country.
