Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) indigenously developed 4G network and commissioned close to 98,000 mobile towers across the country from a launch event held in Odisha.

With this rollout, BSNL takes a significant step toward enhancing India’s digital infrastructure and reducing dependence on foreign telecom equipment. The project is being seen as part of the government’s broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, which emphasizes self-reliance in critical sectors, including telecommunications.

Speaking at the inauguration, PM Modi said the indigenous 4G solution will not only strengthen BSNL’s position in the competitive telecom market but also empower millions of users, particularly in rural and remote areas. He highlighted that the commissioning of 98,000 towers marks one of the largest expansions of mobile connectivity in India’s history.

BSNL’s swadeshi 4G network has been developed with contributions from domestic technology companies, showcasing the country’s growing capabilities in advanced telecom solutions. The state-owned telecom operator aims to extend its services to underserved regions, ensuring affordable and reliable mobile internet access for all.

Industry experts believe that the successful launch of BSNL’s homegrown 4G technology will pave the way for faster deployment of indigenous 5G services in the future, while also boosting local manufacturing and job creation.

The commissioning event in Odisha underscores the government’s focus on digital inclusion and bridging the connectivity gap, especially in rural and far-flung areas. With this development, BSNL is expected to play a more vital role in strengthening India’s digital economy.
