The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread showers and thunderstorms across parts of Tamil Nadu and Odisha on Friday, August 22, with several districts placed under weather alerts.
Tamil Nadu Forecast
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected in many areas of the state. An orange alert has been issued for Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Cuddalore, where moderate rainfall is likely between 4:30 am and 7:30 am on Friday.
In Chennai and its suburbs, “moderate to intense thunderstorms” are expected through the day. By Friday morning, the city had already recorded between 4 and 5 cm of rainfall at Nungambakkam, Adyar, Raja Annamalaipuram, and Vadapalani. Temperatures in the city are likely to hover around 35°C during the day and 27–28°C at night.
Apart from the western districts of Erode, Krishnagiri, Vellore, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Ranipet, Namakkal, and Perambalur, most parts of Tamil Nadu are set to experience light to moderate rain. The IMD has also warned of isolated thunderstorms and lightning in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till August 23.
Odisha Forecast
In Odisha, the IMD has predicted heavy showers in 14 districts on Friday. The Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre placed Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Cuttack under an orange warning urging residents to remain prepared for adverse weather.
A yellow warning has been sounded for Jajpur, Khurda, Puri, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Dhenkanal, where moderate rainfall is expected.
The IMD has advised people in both states to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as rainfall activity is expected to continue in the coming days.
